Creating a relaxed and serene atmosphere mixed with a level of the unexpected was the goal of this project. Redesigned for a family living in Boulder, Colorado, RSI Designs used grays, cognacs, and beiges throughout the home as a base, which allowed for whimsical wallcoverings, patterned tiles and a lively teal room to bring in a level of vibrancy. Fusing organic materials mixed with pops of color, helped create an environment that is at once comfortable yet eclectic.

I see art and design coming together more frequently and earlier in on our projects. Recent conversations and information through trade sources is pointing to the merging of the selection process of art and interior design. Why? Because people want something original. I believe that because so much of interior design selections are accessible through on-line sources (i.e. furnishings, wall coverings, plumbing fixtures etc.), homeowners are feeling that what they are buying is not exclusive or unique to them. It’s become a mass market. However, an art piece makes an interior unique as an expression of the homeowner; and how it is put together within the design is key.

International Contemporary Furniture Fair and Design Month in NY
I had an exhilarating week in New York immersed in the design industry and all that it has to offer. Coming from Aspen, there are the obvious contrasts that we feel when we travel from the Roaring Fork Valley to NYC such as the mass amounts of diverse people there compared to the smaller demographic of people here, the powerful and massive amount of buildings creating amazing skylines (I had a great view out my 51st floor in the Gehry Building in the Financial district) to the mountain vistas, from the haze and city smells to the clear fresh mountain air, the historical ornate, ornamental architecture to the simplified architecture and forms, and lastly the focus on designing small interior spaces with embellishment in contrast to designing simplified interiors that are connected to the views.
Believe it or not I love the architecture of the new bathroom facilities at Rio Grande Park. In 2012, the Hurst Theatre and lobby were renovated, alongside the gardens and ponds, designed by the City of Aspen Parks Department. More recently, landscape renovations around the river and theater were completed, including the eco-friendly, compostable bathrooms.
We’ve always prided ourselves on being able to combine sophistication with comfort and implement organic elements that relate to our beautiful outdoors within our designs. A part of what enables us to do that revolves around creating custom pieces that fit uniquely into every space.
Last January, we lost one of my personal design icons, Andrée Putman. Her appreciation for design and art first began in the musical realm. While not formally educated in design, Andrée worked her way up from messenger to Art Director of the retail chain Prisunic in their Home Department.
It’s an inevitable feeling that as soon as the temperature starts to rise, thoughts of digging your toes in the sand, twilight barbecues and sunshine on your face creep into your head. It’s that time of year where we start to plan more weekend getaways and vacation time with family and friends, so I thought it would be fun to kick off the summer season with some vacation home eye candy.
An important element to any room is artwork, which adds color and personality and helps set moods within a home. Whether splurging on a statement piece by a contemporary icon or scooping up more affordable works at your local community arts center, select pieces that speak to you.
As designers, we have a simple goal: to enhance our clients’ lives through great interiors. We believe that good design can help facilitate learning and improve healthcare and overall happiness, and we recognize our peers who thrive in this realm by devoting time to philanthropic efforts.
THE POWER OF LIGHTING
As we come out of the holidays and the twinkling lights are being packed up for next year, I realize how magical those lights really are. In some ways, I wish we could keep the ambience of holiday lights all year long. Here are a few photos of my holiday lights and ambient lighting within my home. During these winter months, the warmth of the fire and the soft glow can create the perfect scene.
My design team and I are continuing to work at creating spaces that will be a part of our clients’ life long memories. Reflecting on this idea, I understand that choosing a designer is a big decision that needs to feel right. A homeowner is taking a “leap of faith”, trusting that we, the designers, understand your desires and how to bring the components together – things like color, texture, style and comfort. It is left in our hands to transform these spaces and create an atmosphere that will surround the homeowner, their families, friends and guests. The client is making a tremendous investment in us to execute their design visions.
I have been working away on 2 very exciting projects. One interior is a very contemporary mountain home and the other is a traditional family style mountain home with modern accents. Both will become luxury homes just outside of the town of Aspen for friends and family to enjoy. My design team and I love creating these spaces that will create life long memories for our clients.
